DESCRIPTION: Time lock - Chicago Time Lock Co., "Perfection" time lock with two Swiss made mvts, nickel-plated brass case with hinged front lid marked "Perfection Time Lock Patent July 7th 1885," unmarked display glasses over mvt balances, two white enamel 46-hour dials, KW (key not included with this lot), gilt mvts, one dial marked with s#157. An extremely rare piece that represents the second model by Chicago Time Lock Co, of this model John Erroll writes: "Of the approximately fifty of this second style of Perfection thought to have been made, the only complete example is shown here. Five other partial examples are known." The present lot is indeed the same then-known single complete example that Erroll commented on, and is pictured on page 227 of the book. From the collection of John Erroll, co-author of American Genius: Nineteenth-Century Bank Locks and Time Locks. A copy of the book will be included with this lot. Weight of lot is approximately 8 lbs.
CONDITION: Mvts: Both running, both excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall in very limited visible portions, some toning of gilt surfaces; flawless dials; case shows little wear, some fine scratches and scattered dings, some tarnish to its upper lid, good display glasses.
